Masquers Theater Film Series

In 2009 Masquers Theater initiated a Film Series. With the support of Soap Lake filmmaker, Kathy Kiefer, the series offered four films produced by independent filmmakers to new audiences at the theater. Films screened in 2009 included:  Fisherman’s Terminal by B.J. Bullert; the delightful foreign film Bab’Aziz screened with underwriting from Typecast films; Ellen Fricks, Another Side of Peace; and a world premiere of Dan Heaton’s exciting unicycle documentary, Revolution One.

What makes the film series exciting for audiences is that the filmmaker, or someone associated with the production of the film, attends and answers questions after the screening. The first season found audiences staying for an hour after the show engaged in lively discussions about the films. The dialogue created a wonderful forum for the exchange of ideas, and interests, the art of filmmaking, and the many places the filmmakers have ventured in their quest to make documentary films.

2010 Film Series

all films start at 7:00pm

May 15, 2010 – Back to the Garden: Flower Power Comes Full Circle, a film by Kevin Tomlinson.

Synopsis:  In 1988 filmmaker Kevin Tomlinson filmed and interviewed a group of back-to-the-land “hippies” – living off the grid, insulated and isolated from mainstream culture.  In 2006, he tracked down his subjects again to find out what had become of their families utopian plans and dreams. The film captures a time-lapse view of these back-to-the-landers told with moving personal stories of non-conforming tribal families—with lots of freedom but little cash, of unflinching political activism in the midst of small-town, rural America, and hippie kids who today ask whether free love was really free.

July 17, 2010 – Lord Save Us From Your Followers, produced by Dan Merchant.

Second showing on July 18, 2010, at 1:30pm.

Synopsis:  If you were to meet ten average Americans on the street, nine of them would say they believe in God. So why is the Gospel of Love dividing America?  Dan Merchant put on his bumper-sticker-clad jumpsuit and decided to find out why the Gospel of Love is dividing America. After talking with scores of men and women on streets all across the nation, and also interviewing many well-known active participants in today’s “Culture Wars,” Dan realized that the public discussion of faith doesn’t have to be contentious.  Lord, Save Us From Your Followers is a fast-paced, highly engaging documentary that explores the collision of faith and culture in America. After seeing Lord, Save Us From Your Followers, you’ll never talk about faith the same way again!  Trailer and educational material about this film can be found online.

July 24, 2010 – Worlds Largest, Filmmakers Amy Elliott and Elizabeth Donius will be present to screen the film.  The long awaited film that includes many Soap Lake residents talking about the girant lava lamp.

Synopsis:  Desperate for tourism, hundreds of small towns across the U.S.A. claim the "world's largest" something from 15-foot fiberglass strawberries to 40-foot concrete pheasants. Odd, funny and sometimes beautiful, the statues stand as testament to the uniqueness and importance - the largeness - that all people feel, and need to feel, about their communities and their own existence. World's Largest, a feature documentary, visits 58 sites around the country and profiles Soap Lake, Washington's four-year struggle to build the World's Largest Lava Lamp. By documenting these roadside attractions, World's Largest captures the changing landscape of small-town America.

August 28, 2010 – For The Bible Tells me So, produced by Daniel Karslake.

Synopsis:  Can the love between two people ever be an abomination? Is the chasm separating gays and lesbians and Christianity too wide to cross? Is the Bible an excuse to hate? Winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Seattle International Film Festival, Dan Karslake's provocative, entertaining documentary brilliantly reconciles homosexuality and Biblical scripture, and in the process reveals that Church-sanctioned anti-gay bias is based almost solely upon a significant (and often malicious) misinterpretation of the Bible. As the film notes, most Christians live their lives today without feeling obliged to kill anyone who works on the Sabbath or eats shrimp (as a literal reading of scripture dictates). Through the experiences of five very normal, very Christian, very American families -- including those of former House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt and Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson -- we discover how insightful people of faith handle the realization of having a gay child. Informed by such respected voices as Bishop Desmond Tutu, Harvard's Peter Gomes, Orthodox Rabbi Steve Greenberg and Reverend Jimmy Creech, FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO offers healing, clarity and understanding to anyone caught in the crosshairs of scripture and sexual identity.
